14Feb2016 College Applications Process

I am writing this on February 14th sitting in the car at a park in San Jose while Luke plays at a birthday party, but the first pictures are from the 10th of January. You might not be able to see it on the screen, but Chance is getting ready to submit his application for Georgetown.  We had gotten through the UC (University of California) applications – due Nov 30th – and the Common Application – due Jan 1st – but Georgetown has a separate application. It wasn’t due until January 10th, and there is some crossover between essay topics, but Georgetown is Chance’s top choice, and so it was an important application. It was a couple of days of proof-reading, editing, revising, but we got it done in time to hit the “submit” button with about 2 hours to spare.

And this is probably as good as place as any to announce that Chance learned this past Friday that he had been accepted to the University of California, Berkeley. It wasn’t an early decision, but they invited him to interview for the Regents Scholarship (which they only offer to the top 2000 applicants out of about 80,000). You don’t get invited to interview for the Regents without being accepted, so it was a very happy day! We can afford to help pay for Berkeley, so it is a grand backup plan in case we make the numbers work for any of the other schools. We don’t find out regular decisions until the last half of March, so knowing about Berkeley makes this entire process just a little less anxious and worry.
